Newsweek and the Koran Report

I am a little confused at the people who blame Newsweek for the violence and death during anti-American protest in Afghanistan.

Newsweek appears to have based its story on credible, if uncorroborated and allegedly incorrect, information. Should our news organizations now be muzzled not only to protect us Americans from doubting the war on terror, in whatever form the government decides it takes, but to protect foreigners from their own anger at us.

This anger as much a protest of the administration's well documented actions and words as it is of the actions incorrectly attributed to the government by Newsweek. If George W. Bush had built up any trust among the nations of the world, even one that he helped liberate, then a single tale of religious desecration would be unlikely to cause violence.

Most importantly, the only true malfeasants here are the people who used the Newsweek story to fan the mobs in Afghanistan and elsewhere and the mobs themselves, when they turned violent. Since when has the media's reporting of credible news items, no matter how incorrect they may or may not be, been an occassion to chastise the media for the NEWS or to blame the media for individuals' reactions thereto?
